Some people wait all week for the weekend to finally come so they can meet up with friends, drink tons of alcohol, and sleep in. I wait all week so that I can eat.


My friend and I headed into the city to find a new place to grab dinner and a few drinks. Desperately wanting to try someplace new, I logged into Yelp! and let the internet direct me. The only stipulation was: it needed to be a BBQ joint.


Now, I am not a big BBQ fan, but my friend was *craving* a pulled pork sandwich, so I went through the list of restaurants until I found a place I had never been to, let alone heard of. It is called “The Hog Pit” and it is located on 26th and 6th.


I didn’t know what to expect upon walking in, but when I did I realized that it is pretty much a dive bar. Who would have thought with such a classy name as “The Hog Pit” right? I walked in and after a few minutes of being ignored, I walked up to the bar and asked the bartender if I could seat myself. She shrugged her shoulders and walked away. “Do you even know who I AM?!” I wanted to scream at her.


But, my humility got in the way, so I continued to stand there and wait. Finally, I was taken to a booth in the back of the bar and handed a menu. I looked over all the options and ordered a Bud Light while I waited for my friend to show up. 

A few minutes upon his arrival, he told me he already knew what he wanted, while I was still on the fence. Half of the things on the menu I had never even heard of before. (What the hell is a hush puppie?!)


Since we were both starving and I needed more time to figure out my dinner selection, we ordered a plate of mozzarella sticks. Now, I could write an entire post on mozzarella sticks, but I’ll trim it down for you: they were good. 


When the waitress came by to take our order, my friend got his pulled pork sandwich while I was still undecided. I was torn between the cheeseburger (something I get every time I can’t make up my mind) and the chicken fried 



chicken, yet I had NO idea what the hell chicken fried chicken was. I found out that chicken fried chicken is essentially just fried chicken. I don’t know why they have to confuse us all with the extra “chicken”. Anyways, I ordered that so I could try something new. 

The chicken fried chicken came with a side of mashed potatoes topped with white gravy, macaroni and cheese and a piece of corn bread. I had never had this type of gravy before, but it wasn’t as bad as I was thinking. I didn’t love it, but it was tolerable.


The overall meal was good. It wasn’t anything special or inventive or compelling enough for me to go back to The Hog Pit, but it was good. It did the trick. But if you are ever in the area and want some amazing BBQ food, go across the street to Hill Country!
